Description: Beijing 2008 Commemorative Medallion Set for Sport of Mascots This set includes six medallions. Five are made of gold and silver-plated bronze, each of a diameter of 50mm, the front sides of which carry both Chinese and English texts of the XXIX Olympiad, with one for each of the five official mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympics. The other medallion is made of gold-plated bronze with a diameter of 40mm, the front side of which carries both Chinese and English texts of the XXIX Olympiad and the emblem, the back side of which carries an image of the Temple of Heaven. Innovatively designed and made with advanced technique, the medallion set caries an anti-counterfeit label for the Beijing 2008 Official Licensed Product and had a limited circulation of 60,000 numbered pieces. This set is new and in its original packaging. The slip case shows some slight wear at the edges (as pictured). It has been stored carefully in a pet-free and smoke-free home. Like the Five Olympic Rings from which they draw their color and inspiration, the Five Friendlies served as the Official Mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, carrying a message of friendship and peace. Designed to express the playful qualities of five little children who form an intimate circle of friends, the Five Friendlies also embody the natural characteristics of four of China's most popular animals: the Fish, the Panda, the Tibetan Antelope, the Swallow, plus the Olympic Flame. In China's traditional culture and art, the fish and water designs are symbols of prosperity and harvest. And so Beibei carries the blessing of prosperity. A fish is also a symbol of surplus in Chinese culture, another measure of a good year and a good life. The ornamental lines of the water-wave designs are taken from well-known Chinese paintings of the past. Among the Five Friendlies, Beibei is known to be gentle and pure. Strong in water sports, she reflects the blue Olympic ring. Each of the Friendlies has a rhyming two-syllable name, a traditional way of expressing affection for children in China. Beibei is the Fish, Jingjing is the Panda, Huanhuan is the Olympic Flame, Yingying is the Tibetan Antelope and Nini is the Swallow. When you put their names together: Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni, they say "Welcome to Beijing," offering a warm invitation that reflects the mission of the Five Friendlies as young ambassadors for the Olympic Games.
