Description: Water goblet By Lalique Langeais pattern Frosted fluted stem No longer in production The Lalique Langeais is a line of crystal glassware inspired by gadrooned* balusters, designed by Marc Lalique in 1976. The Langeais service is named after the town of Langeais and pays homage to Pays de Loire wine. The pattern references both antique columns and modernist architecture. *Gadrooning is a decorative motif that consists of a series of convex, curving shapes in relief. It can also refer to the ornamental notching or carving of a rounded molding. Gadrooning is also known as nulling. It was a popular decoration in 18th and 19th century furniture, porcelain, glassware, and silver. Some scholars believe that gadrooning originated in medieval Islamic architecture, and that European architects adopted the style after coming into contact with Islamic cultures. From Lalique.com In 1905 Ren Lalique opened a shop at 24, Place Vendme, where he exhibited not only his jewellery but also the glass objects crafted in his workshop at his estate in Clairefontaine, near Rambouillet. Perfumer Franois Coty was so impressed by Ren Laliques designs that he asked him to put his talent to work for the perfume industry. Their collaboration had begun! Their work together revolutionised the perfume industry and made it possible for the first time to offer perfumes in attractive bottles at affordable prices. From then on, Lalique worked increasingly on designs for the perfume sector, finally devoting himself entirely to more industrial techniques of glass production. Ren Lalique, Art Nouveau master jeweller, was to become an Art Deco master glassmaker. 1922 He founded the Verrerie dAlsace glassworks at Wingen-sur-Moder in Alsace, at the heart of a region with a strong and historic glassmaking tradition. Renamed Cristallerie Lalique in 1962. This is now the worlds only Lalique factory.
