Description: This is a seed pot measuring 2 1/2" x 2 1/4", signed underneath Lawrence Namoki Hopi "Long Hair". It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, discoloration, or knocks. Underneath on the base you can still see remnants of a sticker. Lawrence Namoki (1949-2020) was a noted artist from Walpi, the oldest village on First Mesa (Polacca) Arizona. He began with miniature wood carvings of Kachinas, and in the 1980s began making deeply carved pottery with images based on Hopi myths and imagery. The surfaces were slipped and painted to give the appearance of wood. He used Native Hopi clay and plant dyes. His award-winning art can be found in many collections, including The Smithsonian, the Denver Art Museum, and the Royal Family of England. In his words: "I concentrate on one pot at a time, I let my hands do the carving but my mind is on the next project. I never sketch it out. When I'm developing designs, I hear the voices of my elders in my mind like a recording, telling me stories. These are stories that are over a thousand years old, passed from generations. How man was created. How the Hopis prophesized it. I spread my stories using my pottery. My pottery is my canvas". Please see all pictures for condition and details. Enjoy!
