Judge Snow Synopsis:Made with the full cooperation of the real-life Texas Rangers (who never met a publicity gimmick they didn't like), this sprawling historical western stars Fred MacMurray as Jim Hawkins, one of three outlaws working the Lone Star State in the years following the Civil War. Both Hawkins and his partner in crime Wahoo Jones (Jack Oakie) decide to go straight, but their bandit pal Sam McGee (Lloyd Nolan) has not quite seen the light. Eventually, Jim and Wahoo join the fledgling Texas Rangers, an organization dedicated to bringing law, order and honest government to their state, while McGee cuts a swath of terror with his new gang. When the two reformed outlaws are assigned to bring in their old friend Sam, Jim balks but Wahoo accepts. In the film's most talked-about scene, McGee smilingly puts a hole through Wahoo's stomach with a gun he has hidden under a table. Now motivated by revenge (although he couldn't say as much in a post-Production Code film), Jim vows to bring McGee to justice, dead or alive, but preferably the former. Released to coincide with the Texas Centennial, The Texas Rangers was remade in 1949 as Street of Laredo; there was also a 1940 sequel, The Texas Rangers Ride Again. Two outlaws, Jim Hawkins and Wahoo Jones, join the Texas Rangers, intending to use their position to plan cattle rustling raids with their bandit colleague Sam. They rescue a young boy, David, the only survivor of an Indian attack, and take him back to base where he is looked after by Amanda, daughter of Major Bailey. More battles with Indians ensue and Jim falls in love with Amanda. After he fulfills his remit to bring law and order to Kimball County, the locals present him with a ranch and he has a change of heart about being involved in criminal activities. However, when he is assigned to capture his old comrade Sam, who has continued with his banditry, he resigns and is arrested for his previous activities. Sam shoots Wahoo and kidnaps David, and Jim is released to rescue them and kill Sam. Jim Hawkins and Wahoo Jones are stagecoach robbers who head to Texas to find Sam McGee, their partner. Once there, low on funds, they join the Texas Rangers, come across Sam, and decide to run their game by sending Sam inside information. Meanwhile, though, in pacifying rebellious Indians, Jim and Wahoo start to take on the code of the Rangers, and the daughter of the Ranger's major sets her sights on Jim. Can there be honor among thieves, or are Jim, Wahoo, and Sam on a collision course? As a lawless frontier becomes a civilized land, which side will the boys chose?
